The Seven Deities, Who They Are
Green Tara (Shyama Tara): The most beloved and most widely worshipped of all Tibetan Buddhist deities. Green Tara is the active, responsive aspect of compassion, the bodhisattva who acts immediately when called upon, whose left leg is extended in the pose of readiness to rise and help. She is the protector from the eight fears, the swift responder to sincere prayer, the mother of all Buddhas. Her green colour is the colour of active, dynamic, compassionate activity. She holds the utpala lotus, her right hand in Varada Mudra, the gesture of giving.
White Tara (Sita Tara): The contemplative aspect of the same compassion, where Green Tara is active response, White Tara is the deep, sustained quality of compassionate awareness that endures over time. She is associated with longevity, healing, and the removal of obstacles that arise from illness and the approach of death. Her seven eyes, one in each palm and sole, and the third eye, represent the all-seeing quality of awareness that perceives suffering wherever it exists. White in colour, she holds the lotus of purity and extends both blessing and protection.
Manjushri: The bodhisattva of wisdom, the deity invoked for clarity of mind, the ability to cut through confusion, and the development of genuine understanding. His defining attribute is the flaming sword held in his right hand, the sword of prajna, the discriminating wisdom that cuts through the root of ignorance. In his left hand he holds the Prajnaparamita sutra, the perfection of wisdom text, signifying that his sword cuts with the precision of the highest understanding. He is the patron of students, scholars, writers, and all who work with the life of the mind.
Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara): The bodhisattva of compassion, the deity who refused to enter final nirvana until every sentient being had been liberated from suffering. In Tibetan tradition, he is the patron deity of Tibet itself, the deity whose mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, is the most widely recited sacred formula in the Tibetan Buddhist world. His form in this set is likely the two-armed or four-armed version holding the lotus and crystal rosary, in the posture of compassion that reaches toward all beings simultaneously.
Vajradhara: The primordial Buddha of the Vajrayana tradition, the dharmakaya Buddha from whom all tantric lineages are said to originate. Where Shakyamuni Buddha is the historical manifestation of enlightenment, Vajradhara is the primordial source, the ground state of awareness from which all compassionate activity arises. He holds the vajra and bell crossed at his heart, the union of skilful means and wisdom, the fundamental dyad of tantric practice.
The Remaining Two Figures: The set includes two additional Tibetan Buddhist deity figures completing the seven-piece arrangement, likely including forms such as Amitabha Buddha, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), or other central figures of the Tibetan pantheon. Each figure is individually identifiable by their specific iconographic attributes.
The Multicolour Antique Finish
Each figure in this set carries the multicoloured antique finish of the Tibetan sacred metalwork tradition, the warm antique gold of the primary brass surfaces in the recesses and highlights, with specific colour tones applied to the garments, the lotus bases, and the decorative elements of each deity's specific iconographic programme.
The coral red of the lotus bases, consistent across all seven figures, creates visual unity across the set when displayed together, while the individual colour accents on each figure's garments and attributes communicate their specific identities. The antique gold of the faces and primary body surfaces gives each figure the luminous, aged quality of genuine Tibetan Buddhist bronzes.
Each figure is individually cast and individually finished, not simplified for volume production. At 5.5 inches, the specific iconographic attributes of each deity are fully present and identifiable: the sword of Manjushri, the lotus of Tara, the vajra and bell of Vajradhara, the rosary of Chenrezig.
Creating a Complete Buddhist Altar
Seven figures of this scale, displayed together in a single arrangement, create a complete Buddhist altar of extraordinary depth and visual richness. The traditional arrangement places the primary Buddha or primordial deity at the centre, Vajradhara in this set, with the bodhisattvas arranged symmetrically on each side. The two Taras flanking, Manjushri and Chenrezig completing the arrangement, the remaining figures completing the outer positions.
For a meditation practice, the altar arrangement creates a visual field that holds the full spectrum of enlightened qualities, wisdom, compassion, activity, healing, longevity, and the primordial ground of awareness, simultaneously present in the practitioner's visual field during practice.
