The chilambu is generally worn by the priests known as Vellichappad. These priests evoke the spirit of the deities in them during rituals when they undergo a state of trance. Pair of Chilambu from Kerala atate were worn by male dancers to make a rhythmical effect primarily during Theyyam (kerala traditional art) dance performances. These rigid anklets were made by bell-metal casters and have a pair of hollow circular rings.
